I bought this book as a present for my 8 year old grandson. I guess I should have read between the lines closer on the reviews. Some of them hinted that the book was not for young kids but I will tell you that it's not for young kids. About 3 or 4 projects he could probably do eventually but I doubt that he will be looking back at this "book for kids" when he's 17 or 18.I'm an avid shopper on and I've given many good reviews on products but they were well deserved. That's why I think future shoppers for 8 year olds should know this book is more directed toward 12 to 18 year old kids.
Purchased to accompany a Christmas gift of a small pocket knife for a six-year old grandson who expressed an interest in whittling, Carving for Kids is written at the appropriate level, well illustrated and includes a suitable range of projects from simple to challenging. He immediately selected a project and went right to work on it.
Parents and their kids will find CARVING FOR KIDS: AN INTRODUCTION TO WOODCARVING an intriguing project guide holding eleven skill-building projects for kids ages 4-17. Not only does the author teach woodcarving as a volunteer: all four of his kids are carvers too: his book is packed with color photos and clear techniques.
Pros: The projects are good, age-appropriate projects. This has some good ideas for projects to do with younger kids through teen. It's not a bad introduction to carving for an adult either. The diagrams/photos are good and clear. The instructions are well written and easy to follow.CON: The book is not for the child. It is for the adult to read to put together projects. (I guess I was expecting something the child would flip through and follow the directions with supervision). As the adult you'll have to make several of the tools yourself and probably practice the projects yourself before you can teach a child to do it. Lots of prep before you can get started.I recommend this book only if you plan on investing a lot of your own time to make the projects happen and will take on carving as your own hobby as well.
Excellent book for the beginners. My 8 and 9 year olds loved it. This is a must have book for kids.
I was pleasantly surprised to view this book and see that it was a easy read for children as young as 8yrs.of age. My grandsonswere very excited to learn so much the book had to offer. Great illustrations!
i am an adult who wants to start carving. this book is very useful as an introduction for both children and adults who don't have someone to help them start.
My Mom and my Wife are both wood carvers. My grandson, age 11, expressed interest. We bought him a starter set for Christmas and this book to go with it. He's using the book and finds it very helpful.
