Had on my wish list, and wife got it from for my birthday this week. It has some interesting projects, as much as any other of the six newer books I have on the subject. But if you like whittling and want an inspiring book, try to pickup a second hand copy (here) of "Whittling and Woodcarving" by E.J. Tangerman (c) 1936, its full of many, many examples from an era when whittling was much more popular. Unfortunately, it only has instructions for a lesser number of the projects, and some of them are challenging. However, seeing the vast greater quantity of examples in that book, I long for someone to write a book with instructions for a greater range of more challenging whittling projects as seen in that book. Whittling is a step in the right direction, but I'd like to see a turbo-charged version of that book.

I gave this book, along with some basswood to a friend's grandson, as a birthday. He had shown an earlier interest in whittling. He seemed to be inspired by it, and has already a couple of the simple figures. He seems very happy with it, and so am I.

A great book for beginners. Good information on what type of knife to pick, the 4 basic cuts you make, and easy fun projects. I would recommend this book!

Great book but probably not a true beginners guide. Maybe I wasn't purchasing for the right audience though. My nephew loves carving things with his knife. The directions and words used were way above his head though.

Got as a gift for my husband who is interested in learning to whittle. This book looks very appropriate to teach and help beginners.

A number of interesting projects here, but as a "starter guide" it leaves a bit to be desired There's just not enough on the basics- how to make different cuts, how to control the blade, characteristics of different woods, choosing wood, and a lot more that the beginner needs to know. One of the projects requires woodturning tools. This is not a book conceived from scratch but a collection of articles from Woodcarving Illustrated. What there is, is good, but the beginner needs a lot that isn't here.

Bought this as a gift, which the recipient loved. Has a lot of nice color photos so you can see steps of each project, but also does a good job of explaining what to do. Also has a good breakdown of types of cuts, tools, and woods to use. I'd say it's a good buy for anyone who is just starting to get into whittling.

I liked the book and got a lot of ideas to start my new hobby. A lot of what is in here is also in other books, some is fairly basic (good place to start) though often the author does make things look easier then they really are. But then I guess that's where he's qualified to do the book in the first place. Why 4 of 5 stars. Because it is what it is. It is a good book, but after all, just a collection of "easy" projects. Not rocket science or a national best seller. Just a good book to have on getting started in whittling. If I find a whittling book that changes my life, I'll give that book 5 stars.
