Do you think all Jack O'Lanterns look alike? Ray Villafane is a commercial artist who's going to prove you wrong. Technically, these aren't Jack O'Lanterns as they aren't internally lit. They are, however, sculptures that use a pumpkin or gourd as the medium and Villafane brings a creativity to these sculptures that's simply unbelievable. The various faces he carves into these range from the whimsical to the ghoulish, and I think anyone who has a taste for gargoyles and other grotesques is going to love looking through this book. Almost all the pumpkins reproduced here are shown in full-page photos and there's a brief "how-to" at the beginning as well as some unobtrusive plugs for Villafane's website and the products he endorses and sells toward the end of the book.If I hadn't seen some of Villafane's sculptures at the New York Botanical Gardens last year, I would not believe that a pumpkin could possibly be such an excellent medium for carving 3-D sculpture. These aren't photoshopped pumpkins - they are the real deal!I recommend this book for anyone who loves Halloween, especially those who like to make Halloween-themed crafts. This is definitely a book that will inspire you to think outside the Jack O'Lantern in the Box.

This is a great book of art and that is what it is art. amazing detail and photography. I wish it was bigger but i am 100% happy with it. If I had to make a critique I guess some more "how to" would have been nice but really I can not complain.

This is a wonderful book for the coffee table, full of breathtaking work by carver Ray Villafane. There is even a tutorial on how to carve one of the pumpkins. In addition to the book, there is "Ray Villafane's 3-D Pumpkin Carving Tutorials DVD" available here on on the follow page: Ray Villafane's 3-D Pumpkin Carving Tutorials DVD

The pumpkin carving master's book on how to carve a pumpkin face. A must have. Ray Villafane is a professional sculpture and his pumpkins are "stunning". If nothing else this book is fun to look thru and will shock anyone who didn't know pumpkins can be sculpted with such clarity. Ray is an artist and seeing his examples has inspired me to try my hand at this next year. I encourage you to purchase this book because his carving examples are a thing of art. Too bad the pumpkins have to be thrown away after a few weeks. You won't be disappointed.

Aside from 2 or 3 pages of directions on how to do this kind of carving, the rest of the book only contained numerous photographs of Ray Villafane's many unique carvings. While they are fantastic, more effort could have been made in writing a few comments at least on how the carvings were done, or pitfalls, or things to consider.

I love Ray Villafanes' work. I was disappointed in the book because it only had one example of carving. The rest were pictures of his exquisite work -which I already have. I had expected a variety of techniques and how-to's to learn from.

Ray Villafane's work is beyond belief. I bought the book and the video to try and see how he does it. I am an amateur carver, and know I'll never be in his class, but it's fun to see what he can create. The photos are crisp and the whole concept is amazing.

What great pictures of some really original pumpkin carving. However, I wanted to see how he did it and this book didn't explain how he did his carving. I take it that this book is meant to go with his dvds and carving tools.
