The Color Encyclopedia Of Daylilies

A vast array of daylily hybrids has been developed from only a small group of species in Hemerocallis. Hundreds of new daylilies are introduced each year, and no other book describes and illustrates so many of the hybrids in one place. The parent species are also included, but the focus is on the amazing developments that have been achieved through hybridization. Close-up photographs show the detailed characteristics that hybridizers work for. Each photo is accompanied by a thorough description of the daylily's color, size, bloom season, and parentage. In addition to the pictorial encyclopedia, the book offers extensive information on cultivation and hybridization.

I have six books on daylilies, including "Daylilies A Fifty Year Affair," "Hemerocallis, The Daylily," and "A Passion For Daylilies" and grow the "latest and greatest" daylilies available today. If I could only keep one book "The Color Encyclopedia of Daylilies" would be the one I would keep. The color photos are the most extensive and complete of all the books published so far. It includes many selections of the new "Unusual Form" classification as well as all of the other classes. It shows many of the new traits exhibited in modern dayliles including sculpting, cordoury, polytepal, spiders and spider variants, "bagels" double edges, and more It also has the most comprehensive coverage of hybridizers to date.

Excellent book full of eye candy for the daylily lover. The basics have all been covered in other books, but what really makes this book stand out is the pictures. And what pictures! The organization of the book was nice too - chapters to reds, pinks, purples, unusual forms, etc. I have found this book helpful when shopping for daylilies (especially on-line) since I can often find a picture reference for a plant I am considering. My one complaint? While the whole book shows efforts of a wide range of hybridizers, quite a few of today's well known and/or top hybridizers are not shown in the chapter "Daylilies of the Future". Were they not asked to contribute? Did they choose not to contribute? I'm not sure of the answer but they were much missed by me. Otherwise - excellent reference and fun!

You will not find another book with such a variety of beautiful photos of daylilies. For daylily growers that want the most comprhensive photo gallery available to date. I would have enjoyed more details about the parentage of these beautiful daylilies. Munsen and Hill are tops for information but Petit's Encyclopedia is by far the pick for beautiful photos. I am sure the five stars this book received from reviewers was based on the hundreds of excellent color and variety of daylily types. If you like lots of top notch photos this is the best!!!

This is a beautiful book but there are so many new varieties that have been developed since publication it has become somewhat dated.

For serious Day Lily gardeners- this book is a must have for their garden book collections. My only wish now is that the authors and Timber Press will come out with a completely new and revised edition .

One always hopes when you get a color guide of any plant, that at a minimum the colors of the flowers are true to reality. Unfortunately the colors on many of the daylilies in this book are so far off that you wonder what happened. I'm not a novice grower so know that there are caveats in the daylily world that one needs to be aware of when buying daylilies. Such as the color of many daylilies can fade as the day goes by. The daylily America's Most Wanted for instance (page 50) starts out a nice medium yellow, but by late afternoon is bleached out to almost white. So what is the true color of America's Most Wanted? As it turns out it depends on when you take the picture. Since the majority of daylily enthusiasts/hybridizers take their pictures in the early morning, that will be the color they present as the color of the daylily, not what it may turn into as the sun works on it. It would have been nice to see comments on each daylily in this book as to whether the picture you are seeing will end up being the same color in your garden all day long. Some of the daylily colors though can't be explained just by the timing of the picture taking. The daylily 'Strawberry Rose' (page 97) looks orange not anywhere close to the "rose pink" discription it is given (and implied in the name). The best this book will do is give you a starting point to look up further information on a yellow or a pink to see what the true color may be. Since there are so few books with color on daylilies, that makes this "better then nothing".

This was a great disappointment to me. There were some lovely photos, but not much else. I am a serious gardner and specialized in rare day lillies. I wish I'd saved my money on this one. Sorry, I really dislike being negative.

I recently purchased this Encyclopedia of Daylilies. I have many old varieties of daylilies that had been given to me and I wanted to identify them. This book has easily allowed me to do just that. It also explains how to hybreditize and how to divide and replant to make more lilies. It is a great reference that I am sure I will utilize for many years. I am happy to have it on my garden reference book shelf.
