The book was well written. I learned that the plant family Orchidaceae has 25,000 different species. There are 3 different growth types of orchids, epiphytes, lithophytes and terrestrials. I learned that there are orchids native to Europe, such as Orchis, Ophyrs and Dactylorhiza. Something cool i found out is that there are orange orchid flowers, like the habenaria rhodesticta. In southeast Asia, China, Japan, the Himalayas to the Phillippines and Australia the cool growing Cymbidiums thrive. The Odontoglossums and their allied genera live mainly in the Andes mountains, from Mexico through Latin America down to Northern Brazil. One variation, the Odontioda ingera, ('Lyoth Galaxy'), was absolutely amazing. Paphiopedilums, the orchids I started with long ago, are native to Asia from New Guinea to China and India, which is neat. I learned Miltonia orchids live in Brazil and Colombia. Originating in South America, Cattleyas are the most colorful of all types. The Sophrolaeliocattleya 'Mine Gold' is a rare and amazing golden yellowish orange flower. Calanthes are native to Himalays, Burma and Thailand, are Deciduous or Evergreen groups, and were one of the first to be grown in Britain. Also neat is that Phalaenopsis, my personal favorite, are throughout asia and have approximately 70 different species. Dendrobiums have over 1,500 species , ranging from miniscule to ones over 1 meter, are epiphytic and are complex by nature. Last but not least are the Vandas, which include their relatives the Ascocentriums, which are hard to grow, love water and low light intensity.
