Tools For Metal Sculpture 2nd Edition

One of the most frequently asked questions is, "what tools do I need to do metal sculpture"?This is the 2nd Edition of "Tools for Metal Sculpture, A Beginner's Guide".I've made my living with metal sculpture for over 40 years so I have a pretty good idea of what tools are needed.I started out in 1967 with just some basic tools. When I started making a living through metal sculpture in 1973 I began adding more tools. My goal is for you to be able to make informed choices. In this edition I've add more photos so that are now over 90 photographs.. Within specific tool categories there are links to 20 of my YouTube videos where you can see the tools and how I use them.Included are tools that you can make yourself at little or no cost.I've tried to approach this as if I was giving myself advise when I got my first torch back in 1967. I really didn't know much and I bought tools that just didn't work out. That meant that I was spending money which would have been better spent on tools I could use.You can put my experience to work and save yourself time, money and frustration. You can see from the Table of Contents that this comprehensive. At the end of the book I lay out a list of tools that I feel are essential to get started. Then another list of tools that I'd suggest adding later.Table of ContentsBasic Hand ToolsBrazing Welding TableTable ViceDrill Press Vices The 4 Inch and 4 ½ Inch GrinderAmps = PowerDrill PressCutting ToolsHot CuttingPlasma CuttingCold Cutting 5” Table Shear 12” Table Shear Heinrich Bar CutterFoot ShearSwivel Head ShearThe Jig Saw Cutting with an Abrasive DiscWorking Sheet Metal Combination SquareSheet Metal Brake Hand Seamer12" Three in One Sheet Metal ToolIncrease thickness of Copper16 oz. I have recently began making sculptures again and I have dabbled in several mixed medias. Particularly Mig Welding. This book is short, to the point, well written and very informative. If you are looking for the 30,000 foot view on what to get in gear, safety practices and technique, this is a great starter book. I recommend grabbing this one prior to diving in. Both of Georges books we just the perfect read for me.

As in another review I wrote on another "starter copper training book", I feel that I may be too harsh in my critique. It comes from many years of experience working with copper. I have to say that the few tools mentioned in this book will barely get you started if you truly wish to go deep into copper work. One of the things a student learns in my classes is the vast array of tooling that one truly needs to go beyond simple and small "trinket like" items. If that is a level the reader is comfortable with, great, buy this book! If you want to make big strides in copper work, I am not so sure. Yet, we all have to start somewhere. The author is doing a great job in a difficult subject. Most will gain considerable help from this book. Some will be disappointed and frustrated.

George writes like he was talking to a friend. He tells you about all the tools he uses and some that he thinks are not needed to start up your metal working fun! He is telling us what he actually thinks is important to start and them some!

This book was written by a true craftsman artisan Who was and is a master of his craft and has a passion to help others. All of his kindle books are affordable. The tools can be purchased on an as needed basis. Since the books are very affordable I recommend purchasing the set.I appreciate George Goehl's communicative skills. Very helpful!Dan F

It's an introduction to working with sheet metals like copper. I read it in an hour, it was clear, and it got me going.
