Manual J Residential Load Calculation (8th Edition - Full)

Manual J 8th Edition is the national ANSI-recognized standard for producing HVAC equipment sizing loads for single-family detached homes, small multi-unit structures, condominiums, town houses, and manufactured homes. The manual provides quick supplemental details as well as supporting reference tables and appendices. A proper load calculation, performed in accordance with the Manual J 8th Edition procedure, is required by national building codes and most state and local jurisdictions.

This book has everything needed to do a manual J. I have no AC experience, especially for calculating size of system and air flow into each room, but by reading through this book and working with a spreadsheet, I was able to adequately perform a Manual J analysis sufficient to determine that my AC system is working properly, is sized properly, and the air flow in most of the rooms in the house is sufficient. The calculations using a spreadsheet allowed me to vary factors such as max design temperatures to show me why my system was not cooling as I thought is should in 98 F temperatures. I was also able to play with different levels of insulation in the attic to see what the best R value is for the money. It is easy to see the diminshing return on investment as the R value gets sufficiently high. What I did not care for in this book is the way it is organized. There are a number of things that are repeated over and over, chapter to chapter that are relatively easy to grasp, and then some very important items are mentioned once or twice and somewhat hidden. Also, nomenclature is not deffined very well and used in some cases without prior definition as far as I can remember. The book could be reduced many pages and be easier to follow if a lot of the simple redundancy is removed, and important items are presented more often and clearly.

An excellent reference for those interested in understanding the impact building materials choices have on HVAC system sizing. Definitely worth the money.I used it (hard copy) in conjunction with ACCA's MJ8 spreadsheets. Doing that allows you to work with finer precision than third party software programs allow for. The latter compiled tools are of course probably better if you are totally new to Manual J concepts.

This is a very technical book that is best avoided by the DIYer. It is designed for HVAC professionals and those planning on entering the trade.I would also recommend it for general contractors and architects that need to know something about working with and around HVAC. Its easier for a contractor to coordinate HVAC and plumbing if the needs of both trades are understood (at least a little).

There are a lot of tables and charts that are not displayed clearly and you can't zoom in to get a better view. It's the type of book that you need to reference other pages while reading and the kindle format does not make that easy.Buy the hard copy

I made the mistake of thinking I could use the manual to decipher some of the undocumented "features" of LoopCAD 2014. What a disappointment. There is no logical outline of what is covered and the index has major voids. If someone finds this book useful, my hat is off to them. Talk to your reader. Give them a hint.

Very technical. Also wrote in a very confusing manner. I ended up buying j load software and returning the book. I also can not understand why no used j load manuals are for sale?

MANUAL IS TOO TECHNICAL ONLY USE FOR AN ENGINEER IS TO KNOW HOW TO FILL OUT FORMS IF REQUESTED BY TOWN SUBCODE OFFICIAL AND THAT SERVES NO PURPOSE THE AIR CONDITIONING AND HEATING RESPONDS TO WEATHER CONDITIONS SO NO MATTER WHAT IS INSTALLED IT ONLY RUNS LONG ENOUGH TO OVERCOME AMBIENT CONDITIONS, ALTHOUGH EQUIPMENT DOES NOT WANT TO BE OVER SIZED TOO GREATLY. DONT KNOW IF MANUAL J TAKES INTO ACCOUNT SAFETY FACTORS OR THE OTHER ALTERNATE TO BE SLIGHTLY UNDERSIZED TO KEEP IT RUNNING CONSTANTLY TO MAINTAIN UNIFORM CONDITIONS UNDER MAXIUM AMBIENT CONDITIONS--HOWEVER WE ARE NOT AT CONSTANT MAXIMUM CONDITIONS SO THAT NO MATTER WHAT CONDITIONS YOU DESIGN FOR, THEY ARE INCORRECT MOST OF THE TIME.ITS A GOOD BOOK FOR A CLASS ROOM OR FOR A CONTRACTOR WHO WANTS TO SHOW THAT HIS MINIMAL DESIGN WILL WORK AND BE THE MOST COMPETATIVE OTHER THAN THAT THERE ARE EASIER WAYS TO DETERMINE EQUIPMENT LOADS

I was able to use the Manual J spreadsheet provided by ACCA and easily produced a heat loss/gain for my house.
