Lots of detailed diagrams on how to make these cute whirlygigs.But be careful where you put yours... they will disappear from your front yard if you're not careful!!
This book came in very very helpful. My son had to make one of these for a project in school that was due the first of of school. You know I could not find a single book that resembled what I was looking for!! 3 counties and still no luck. Thank god I found this one, is very insightful, informative, and interesting. If you're wondering how to make these things, this book does make it easier.Was delivered on time, good condition.
It doesn't have every design, but there are enough varied plans to give you a good start. The introductory section on building the propellers and general design considerations should be enough for a moderately experienced wood worker to make whatever they want.
This is a very good book. If you want to make whirligigs you will find good instructions, patterns and ideas in here. I suggest that if you are a novice or somewhat skilled woodworker that you read all of the instructions before you begin a project and make sure that you understand them thoroughly. Some things in this book do take a moderate amount of skill. Other parts of the assembly can be done more easily than Mr. Lunde explains if you seek out some help from another source. Because of that I deduct one star. That being said, as a hobbyist woodworker I am aware that I am learning as I go along, my skills improve with each project, and that some things will have mistakes in them or not look as good as more skilled woodworkers. As Tommy Mac says on his show: "Guys, just spend some time behind the tools." Your skills will improve too the more you work at it.
I retired a couple of years ago, and last year I bought a scroll saw. I also subscribed to a Scroll Saw and Woodworking magazine. I saw this book advertised in the magazine, so I bought it (and several others). There are a couple of whirligigs in here that I might be interested in making as gifts. Easy to follow instructions. I would have given it a 5 star rating if there were a few more projects to my liking in there. But I was really looking for something with more moving parts. Good book for the money.
There is almost more wire bending then wood working. Should be easy for most hobbyists. A wire bending jig would be a big help.
Mr. Lunde's books are the way to start basic whirligigs 101. I loved the way he talked you through each phase and type of project. The only slight drawback to his projects are the availability in todays world of some of his specified materials, many are no longer available at local hardware or home centers so all you have to do is supplement with what is carried in todays stores. Other than that both his books are worth the cost for the knowledge shared.
This book is very useful as an entry level book, and the illustrations are helpful. Many of the photos used to illustrate specific techniques are dark and some almost impossible to read. The mechanics are simple and doable by the first timer.
