Our gardening consultants use this book constantly to help homeowners decide which plants work best in different areas of the landscape. There is one or two minor outdated listings, such as recommending leyland cypresses which have been overplanted in this region and recently have been found to suffer from an incurable canker disease that can kill whole rows of trees. However, customers can use this terrific guidebook and then call their extension office or trusted nursery to confirm their selections before making big purchases. A little homework before planting will reward them with healthier, longer lived plants and minimal need for the use of toxic chemicals. With more people making major plant purchases based on price at big box stores, instead of wisely going to nurseries where the employees are more knowledgeable, it is important to have a book like this available to the average homeowner. Also, this book is geared specifically to the mid-atlantic region's unusual weather challenges.Excellent book, well written and well organized, a great gift for most gardeners.
The New York/Mid-Atlantic Gardener's Book Of Lists by Bonnie Lee Appleton (Professor of Horticulture, Virginia Tech) and gardening journalist and writer Lois Trigg Chaplin contains more than two hundred lists to help regional gardeners select the very best plants for their particular interests. Ranging from plants that attract butterflies, to shrubs that offer fall color to hardy annuals for early spring bloom, The New York/Mid-Atlantic Gardener's Book Of Lists is also laced throughout with practical and insightful tips for gardeners. The New York/Mid-Atlantic Gardener's Book of Lists is a first-rate, "user friendly", highly recommended guide for tailoring a garden to suit the needs and interests of gardeners in New York and the other mid-Atlantic states.
Very useful product. It really is a book of LISTS. It would be even better to have some tables built in, so that the reader can find plants that meet more than one of the categories, e.g. perennials that do well in clay soil AND shade AND acidic soil. This would make it much easier for the reader - who otherwise needs to spend more time flipping through the book to find suitable plants.
After moving from a western dry climate, I needed help for selecting recommended plants that work well in this area. An even bigger help are the lists of plants to avoid and those considered invasive or aggressive. Out of a dozen new garden books, this is my go-to book while I put together a landscape plan. Because these are lists compiled by many different plants people, there are some inconsistencies for zone hardiness for plants appearing on different lists, but the true zone can be easily researched so not a big deal. Good tips and suggestions but I found that many of the listed plant sources are no longer in business (likely due to the economy).
Bought this book to pick the right plants for the best placement in our NJ coastal garden. All the information that you'll ever need is definitely here, but you have to keep jumping from list to list on multiple noncontiguous pages to get all the info you need. Awkward to use.
Trying to decide what to plant? Lists for just about every decision I needed to make. You will need to supplement this book with a garden handbook that shows individual plant needs but it really expedited my decision making.
