I liked the book. Its packed full of useful information. I'm a hobby gardener, not an expert and I found lots of useful hints. I'm sure I'll be able to follow the steps. Charts are used to give the reader find condensed information on specific plants. Its not a book of pretty pictures but the layout is easy to read and the pages are attractive. At first, I was surprised at the use of "Brand names" but decided that recommendations are always welcome and I can always find substitutes if I want to. I have only one complaint. There's no index. I saw some information on mildew but spent over an hour trying to locate it again. The table of contents is helpful in a general way but the book would be more useful if it were indexed. I'm going to have to use bookmarks to mark things I'm interested in - there are lots of those.

This book is a real treasure. In addition to some introductory material overviewing growing conditions throughout Illinois, this guide literally goes month by month through such subjects as vegetable gardens, lawns, roses, perennials, and tree care (plus a few more). Not every sort of plant is covered--the book would be at least four times as big, then!--but enough are covered that just about anyone would feel greater confidence in setting about creating a garden or lawn or flowerbed, or improving an already existing one. I have already seen some improvement in my lawn over the fall months, at least part of which I attribute to the tips and advice contained in this guide. Well worth purchasing!

Sometimes I am so busy doing things in our yard that I forget some of the basic maintenance needs of the garden. That is the reason I find this book to be invaluable. I have finally learned to trim the roses when the forsythia blooms, and trim the lilacs after their bloom has finished, but there are many tasks that are firmly fixed in my mind, and I love being able to just pick up this book and be reassured that either I've done what I need to do or that I won't be forgetting something that hadn't yet occurred to me.

Month-by-month gardening is for anyone who wants to garden. I love that you don't have to start at the front of the book. If you buy this in May, you start reading the book from the May section. You can flip through as the seasons change. The person who wrote this book is a genius for coming up with a month-to month style book. This is totally appropriate for a gardening book, and especially so if you live in Illinois (or any other state in which they have a book like this for). This is a read as you need kind of book, but a must have for sure!

So many gardening guides try and address the entire country in a one size fits all attempt to sell more books. These are typically limited in truely helpful information on your specific region. This book is great for Illinois gardeners and home owners in general. I love the month by month format so I can keep track of what I should be doing each month in my lawn and garden. The only thing I'd change is combining all the sections so everything for one month was together, the book has sections like garden, trees, lawn, etc and each section has it's own monthly pages.

This book presents month-by-month plans for growing your garden in Illinois. It gives tips on such activities as planting, pruning, fertilizing, and so much more. The plans are organized into categories, including annuals, bulbs, herbs, vegetables, houseplants, lawns, perennials, roses, shrubs and trees. I love this book, and recommend it wholeheartedly!

This is a book for both novices and experts. It is the most useful of the many gardening books that I own, and the one I go back to over and again.
