Like another reviewer, I checked this out of the library and liked it so much I bought a copy. The most valuable parts are the comprehensive references to local organizations, individuals, independent local garden centers and local authoritative web sites specifically about Missouri gardening challenges. These saved me a LOT of time researching many topics(even with my high speed internet access). Less valuable but still nice were good basic gardening tips, lists of plants that typically have success, and inspiring profiles of select Missouri gardeners. Good balanced overview of the basic challenges of Missouri weather/soils/plants. Overall, a good book for beginning and intermediate Missouri gardeners.
She lives here, knows people here, has stories from here, has sources from here. Good .....good...great book. Another book out there on the subject is written by a guy who has never lived or grown in Missouri. I highly recommend for just the references alone.
It arrived quickly which was good because I was just getting ready to plant my first garden in Missouri. Lived in Texas for a long time and the conditions are very different in Missouri. It has come in so handy. Great Book.
Becky Homan's new book is truly an insider's guide to Midwest Gardening. Simply written, it covers all of the gardening basics and features personal tidbits from professionals, master gardeners and gardening friends. Great for the beginning gardener and a good reference for gardening addicts like me! The Missouri Gardener's Companion has been an enjoyable read these past winter months as I make plans for the garden in 2010. It is refreshing to review the Expert Gardening Tips for our Missouri Gardens compiled by Becky, an avid gardener herself. Missouri is a challenging state to garden in and The Missouri Gardeners Companion has proved to be a valuable gift for anyone moving to our Show Me State!
My husband has been a community garden leader for over 12 years and I am a very amateur gardener. We both find this book to be a very usefull tool that offers insights and resources in so many ways, from homegrown solutions to professional advice and products.
