I've made probably 75% of the recipes in this book. They're wonderful. I serve many for friends, all of whom love the flavors in these dishes. The book is divided into nine sections, featuring cooking from Russia, Poland, Germany, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, and Albania. It's interesting to move from country to country (inside the book!), trying the recipes in each. Some are very similar, others are wildly different. I knew nothing about Albanian food, for instance, but was delighted with the Egg and Lemon Soup, similar to the Greek dish; and by the Mixed Fish Stew with Potatoes, which I thought would be awful, actually, because I dislike fish with tomato sauce, but this dish, made with garlic, onions, tomato paste, white wine, potatoes, fish, and a few spices, is so easy to make and quite tasty.

I was lucky enough to receive a hardcover edition of this cookbook from my then-husband-to-be in 1974 and have been using it ever since. It is filled with recipes from Eastern European cuisines prior to 1989, so these recipes from then-captive nations may be a bit different than recipes from the same countries in this freer time but have stood the test of time (for me).Cuisines: Russian, Polish, East German, Czechoslovakian, Hungarian, Romanian, Bulgarian, Yugoslavian, Albanian.It has been wonderful to have authentic dishes representing cuisines of of nations that, though not free, maintained their culinary integrity. Those recipes offered in 1974 and still offer now delicious traditional dishes.

Just back from a vacation in Eastern Europe and suffering from a lack of these lovely dishes in the USA, this book gives me a way to recreate some of those meals and more! I felt lucky to find this book.
