I'm a long-time wood carver, and have used this book successfully. Instructions are easy to understand and the patterns, illustrations & photos (some in color) are excellent. For the beginning carver, I would steer from the author's advice of using Douglas fir (it tends to split when it dries) to cedar (blocks made from old fence posts) and then work up to bass wood.

It would be difficult to imagine a more useful book for the beginning woodcarver. Everything you need to know to get off to a perfect start Spielman covers, and he does it really well.He begins with a detailed discussion of the various species of wood and their carving attributes, where to find them, and how to dry them. He more than adequately covers tools and techniques, and leads the reader through the entire process, from roughing out to refining the shape and setting the eyes.He briefly covers finishing, both staining and painting, though his obvious preference, judging from the examples given, is to let the natural grain take center stage. Most of the finished decoys shown are stained, but there are several painted birds, as well. The sections that follow take the carver one step farther on the road to realism with carved primaries and raised wing tips. He clearly shows how to add texture with a wood burning pen, and how to add subtle vermiculations using India ink. There are many plan views on grids, both line drawings and photographs, for pattern-making. A large format copier is a Godsend for enlarging the designs, but with patience and persistence, it can still be done the hard way. With Spielman's clear, understandable instructions and almost solid step-by-step procedural photographs, you really can't go wrong. This is truly one of the best books ever written for the beginning woodcarver, and is a fine introduction to decoy-making.

Arrived in excellent shape, thank you.

i think that this book its a little boring, needs more information ...
