Tiny Whittling: More Than 20 Projects To Make

A hip beginner’s guide to one of the world’s most relaxing, inexpensive, and rewarding hobbies, this handbook puts a modern spin on an ancient craft by teaching readers how to whittle whimsical miniature creatures. With just a sharp knife, a little practice, and the tiniest block of wood, anyone can make a charming carving in less than an hour. Led by an award-winning carver and artist, this manual takes readers through the basics, demonstrating how to carve root vegetables in order to minimize the danger of accidents; readers will create a simple turnip bear or a carrot mouse. As confidence builds, readers graduate to wood, and work through step-by-step instructions accompanied by photographs, enjoying increasingly polished results as they refine their technique. It includes easy-to-use templates and sources for tools and materials, readers will learn how to sand, paint, and decorate their tiny carvings, eventually creating a fox, an owl, a horse, a hen, and even a forest or farmyard setting for their miniature menagerie.

I love this book! Steve Tomashek keeps it simple with this instructions and projects that continue to move you along in your quest to become a carver. His drawings on the blocks are mostly front view with some bottom views as well. But with this type of carving, less is more and his photos and step by step instructions are clear and concise. I have purchased many carving books, and I can say without hesitation, this is THE best beginning carving book out there. If your goal is to work BIG, look elsewhere, but if you like small scale, you need this book. This is my entry into Netsuke carving--------it's like taking the necessary baby steps to really becoming an excellent carver. Thank you Steve Tomashek for sharing your knowledge, years of experience and taking the time to write this book so we all can aspire to be as talented as you!

For a beginning in whittling, this book is a pretty good start. There are some cool projects included with a variety of materials (soap, turnips, etc.) and the full color photographs and easy to understand writing will have you carving cute little animals in no time at all.If I had one complaint, it's once the book gets to more advanced techniques with wood, some of the instructions are inadequate. The pictures jump too far ahead and you're left wondering how in the world they're getting the results they do.This book certainly won't take you from novice to master, but for a good overview of tools, techniques, and some nifty, simple projects that will impress your friends and that girl you're too shy to talk to, this little book is worth the price.

I purchased this book and am totally pleased with it. It is great for the beginning carver, and fun for anyone interested in carving Tiny. I was most impressed with the quality of the book. Nice thick colored pages and most of all a matte finish which eliminates reflections on the pages. I have only had the book two days, and can't wait to get started. Fun book with lots of knowledge about safety, knife and wood selection. Quick delivery and excellent packaging. Buy it.

Nice photos and instructions, but the patterns for the pieces are not included. I bought this book for my father who is an avid whittler and he was thrilled until he began really looking through the book and realized there are no patterns. It is just a photo book of someone else's whittling. Really disappointed!!!

I was disappointed in this book when I saw that there were no patterns to work from. Not everybody has even basic artistic skills to be able to draw symmetrical patterns of animals in front, side, bottom views, and to have it all work out successfully to a 3D form in the end. It seems to me that the author assumes this to be the case. Nice pictures...but in my case, the book is almost unusable. I'm considering sending it back.

All the projects are far too easy and follow the same formula. I am a novice at carving miniatures and hoped to learn new skills but was surprised that this book never surpassed what I've taught myself in the past two weeks of carving.

This is a very attractive book and the carvings are adorable. But, the pictures and instructions are not the best. I was also disappointed that there were no patterns. For those of us that are new to carving and not artistic, patterns would help. I’ve looked at some of the videos the author has on YouTube – they are more artistic than a teaching an instructional tool.

Good pics and easy instructions in this book. I'm glad I've added it to my collection of wood carving books.
