I was interested in recumbents, but the prices are astronomical. I bought this book and Bicycle Builder's Bonanza from the same author. This bike has several trike plans, while the other has two wheeled recumbents. Of course, both have outrageous choppers as here and trick bikes, etc. I'd buy this for choppers or rec. trikes, and the other for tall bikes and 2 wheel recumbents. The plans are detailed, simple to follow (even if you know nothing about design and reading plans), and complete. his website, atomiczombie, has many more. I had already purchased several bike plans from the site while waiting for my books to be delivered. The bike building is written in a way that help you understand the reason why each part or design works and design/modification trade-offs. the books both explain how to strip a bike for parts and how each part works. the plans are very non-technical and, as I said, easy to follow. Because of the detail in the plans, you not only build the bike, you understand why each part is set up as it is so you end up understanding bike design much more than simple plans would show you. Both books are excellent.
I don't know why genius has to be evil. And there ain't much genius in the projects described. However, this was just what we were looking for- a practical guide to create very interesting projects. I bought the book for my oldest son (he's 14), yet I had just as much fun deciding which of the projects we like the most. The book brought us together, again, so now we have 12 different bicycles in the garage (all from the junkyards) and two electric beauties being constructed. Thanks. the best inspiration for a budding bike mechanic.
I purchased this book and also the Bicycle Builder's Bonanza by the same author because I wanted ideas on how to build my own recumbent bike or trike. The plans and details are awesome, and Brad often explains why certain design decisions were made. I think the best thing about the book is that it inspires me to go out and build something. My mind is already cranking on how to modify the designs presented in the book. Now, my only problem is deciding between the Delta Wolf and the Street Fox!
Bike, Scooter and Chopper Projects for the Evil Genius is the second book from the team of Brad Graham and Kathy McGowan. Like their first offering, Atomic Zombie's Bicycle Builder's Bonanza, it's a readable, down-to-earth common-sense collection of plans, tips and tricks for anyone who's ever felt the urge to "roll their own" cycle. It's packed with useful information, and projects are presented in a series of manageable steps. My only disappointment (and this is not a fault of the book) was that I had already purchased many of the plans separately from the Atomic Zombie web site, and there was some duplication of material. Having said that, this is an excellent read, good fun, and a guide that deserves a spot on every bike hacker's bookshelf.
This is a well detailed book for anyone wanting to start building custom bikes or trikes. Brad takes you through all the steps of cutting up and reconstructing bikes as well as fabricating with new material. He shows that you are only limited by your own imagination. He admits he is not a seasoned welder but shows how you can get started doing this if you take the time and patience to dress up your work. I highly recommend this book for the beginner as well as the seasoned builder for its detail on how to get started as well as ideas for future projects.
I LOVE THIS BOOK. Authors have a lot of good ideas. When I finish my Mustang I plan on building a few of these bikes to ride around the car shows. I've also joined the web site www.atomiczombie.com.
Have had both Atomic Zombie books for a number of years, big fan of the website as well. The books are great for inspiration and information, can take it with you for a bit of reading. The website and electronic plans are better for completeness, have a number of the plans. Only 1 project started, got pushed aside while other projects came up. Still want to get back to it, and of course can't wait to start bent project as well.If a 3rd book came out, which I know it won't, I'd be ordering it as well.
Great collection of plans if you ever want to build your own bike. Have used it to build one and looking for parts for another. Simple and easy to follow instructions as well as super support with the online forum.
