The English Country House Garden: Traditional Retreats To Contemporary Masterpieces

There is something special about the English country house garden: from its quiet verdant lawns to its high yew hedges, this is a style much-desired and copied around the world. The English country house is most often conceived as a private, intimate place, a getaway from working life, and here you will see gardens with meandering walks amongst greenery and contemplative pools of water. A sundial, a pergola, a croquet lawn, a herbaceous border of soft planting; here is a space to share secrets, to wander and relax, and above all to enjoy English afternoon tea. But even the most peaceful of gardens also take passion and hard work to create. This new book takes a fresh look at the English country house garden, starting with the owners and the stories behind the making of the gardens. With spectacular photos by Marcus Harpur, the text presents thirty gardens - some grand, some personal, some celebrated, some never-before-photographed - to explore why this garden style has been so very enduring and influential. From the Victorian grandeur of Tyntesfield and Cragside, to the Arts & Crafts simplicity of Rodmarton Manor and Charleston; from Scampston, in the same family since the 17th century, to new gardens by Dan Pearson, Tom Stuart-Smith and the Bannermans; and with favourites such as Hidcote and Great Dixter alongside new discoveries, this book will be a delicious treat for garden-lovers.  The English Country House Garden won the ‘Best Inspirational Book’ at the Garden Media Guild Awards, 2014

an amazing compilation of the english country house gardens that most people are not even aware of that directly or indirectly influences their gardening. but for those who are more than curious about the origins of gardens in specific regions of england, this is an interesting read that gives brief but succinct commentaries on not only the historical settings but also perspectives on what aspect of gardening makes each house distinctive. a valuable asset for a gardening library.

A BEAUTIFUULY CRAFTED BOOK FROM START TO FINISH. I HAVE VISITED MANY OF THE MORE FAMOUS GARDENS REVIEWED WITH OUR LOCAL MASTER GARDENERS GROUP SEVERAL YEARS AGO. NO BODY DOES IT BETTER THAN GREAT BRITAIN. THIS WINTER WHEN THE SNOW IS BLOWING I WILL LOOK AT THOSE PICTURES ESPECIALLY THOSE ENGLISH ROSES AND THAT LOVELY SCENT WILL WAFT IT WAY OUR OF THE PAGES AND INTO MY NOSTRILS AND I WILL ONCE AGAIN BE IN THE LAND OF MY ANCESTORS.

This is a gorgeous book featuring 25 private estate gardens in England. The book begins with two famous ones, Hidcote and Sissinghurst, but the remainder were unfamiliar to me. Expansive lawns, walled gardens, stone archways, lush perennial and rose borders, they are all here, displayed in exquisite photographs. Truly a book to loose yourself in.

Great format and large photos!! Had hoped for more details of the specific plants, my fault for not reading the synopsis beforehand. Delightful insight into these grand gardens and estates, each is worthy of its own book.
