Great book of ideas and how to do for: Father Christmas, elves and wood spirits. I found the power tool references applicable to hand tools. Very good how to do the faces, eyes and coloring. I was much inspired to release the wood spirits of my cypress knees. The individual projects are in sync, and good supporting pics. A little trying to understand what the author is trying to say. Sequence of book NOT part of a projects is relevant, but jumps around a lot.Not good regarding the title: "Carving CYPRESS Knees." Should have been titled "Carving Father Christmas, spirits" I bought the book SPECIFICALLY for the cypress knee connection.Immediately author references how difficault cypress bark removal is, and says, "....someone else can tell you how to remove the bark." Oh. Later, the author references the photo gallery of sculptures (inspiring) and says this book will not tell the reader how to do laughing sculptures, or how to do teeth. Oh 2.I was also put off by no helpful hints as to how to work with a cypress knee. Cypress knees are very difficult (wieldly) to get a (literal) hold of for carving. Betcha that the author knows many tricks to make the process easier, safer and more fun.So, I recommend the book. Certainly enjoyed, learned and was inspired by the book. Just disappointed regarding advice working specifically with a cypress knee.
This is a great book which is a must for learning to carve cypress knees. Great pictures and clear instructions. Thanks J Mallory
This, and every carving/whittling books I have ordered thru for the past year have arrived in 'excellent' condition. I usually order 'used' books at a lower price but so far, they look like they just came off the press. The books are shipped promptly and I would highly recommend others to consider purchasing any books thru . Sandy Huff a very satisfied customer
I was fortunate enough to take 2 classes with Carole Jean Boyd & this book closely follows her technique for carving cypress knees. Cypress knees are very different to carve due to the constantly changing grain direction. Carole Jean uses a combination of carving techniques to bring about the beauty & depth hidden within the knees which naturally reach skyward in many of the southern U.S. swamps. Carole Jean is a very elegant lady & has a very excellent style which she is quite willing to share with you in her book! Buy her book & practice her techniques & you won't be disappointed. Thanks Carole Jean! Alan.
This is a very good book but since much of the work is done with power tools or wood burners it wasn't appropriate for me...my bad...good book
I recently started painting cypress knees, then carved one. I enjoyed it so much, I wanted to learn more. I am so pleased with this book! The pictures are beautiful! I wanted to go out to my little workshop, and start carving as soon as I put the book down last night (which was around midnight)! I'm looking forward to the exciting world of carving even more now! I thank the author for sharing her knowledge and passion for carving.
If carving cypress knees is something you would like to do, be sure to add this book to your library. A wealth of tips and other information, for the beginner and the more experienced.
I have many woodcarving books. For carving tips and painting this is one of the better ones. The great pictures should give you many carving ideas. Great book and Good carving Dave
