"Christmas in Traditional Polish Style with Authentic Recipes" is a "musthave" book. It's a compendium for every Pole who may have drifted from his or her Polish roots/traditions or the Polish American, who is interested in learning more and teaching their children/grandchildren about their wonderful ethnic heritage!!! The learned wanting to know more about other cultures and their cookery would be well advised to have this book in their collection of special books. As a Polish-Italo-American cook I have tried many of the recipes in Robert Strybel's cookbooks. All turned out fantastic!! The way the recipes are written is not in the traditional "English" style format. The recipes are written as if Mama Joan, Babcia Bertha or Ciocia Maryja were standing next to you and giving you down-home cooking hints and pointers. They make you feel like you are in Mama's, Babcia's and Ciocia's warm homey kitchen again. The book begins with ADVENT, extensively highlights WIGILIA (Christmas Eve), the main event in Polish traditon and goes on through NEW YEAR'S, THREE KINGS (Jan. 6) all the way to CANDLEMAS (Feb. 2), the end of the Polish Chrsitmas season. The book reminded me of Christmas Eve at my house growing up as a child. The customs, the food, and family & friends gather at the table. Christmas eve was always a larger celebration than christmas day.
