Part of the simply outstanding "Best of the Best" state related cookbook series from Quail Ridge Press, Best Of The Best From New Mexico Cookbook is a compilation of recipes drawn from a variety different cookbooks showcasing New Mexico's culinary traditions and treasures of this southwestern state. From Gazpacho (Cooking at the Natural Cafe in Santa Fe); Zuni Succotash (Southwest Indian Cookbook); Burgundy Venison Steak Tips (Sassy Southwest Cooking); and Chicken Tacos with Avocado (Beyond Loaves and Fishes); to Ruidoso Winner (Savoring the Southwest); Bavarian Apple Torte (Recipes from the Cotton Patch); Applesauce Cake (Billy the Kid Cook Book); and Berry-Pecan Flan (The Santa Fe School of Cooking Cookbook), each easy-to-prepare recipes has a complete list of readily acquired ingredients and step-by-step preparatory instructions. A kind of "sampler" cookbook, one of the best features is the section devoted to listing each cookbook represented in this culinary collection, including their respective publisher's contact information for obtaining the originating cookbook for any particular recipe that has proven to be an especial family favorite. Very disappointed. As a NM native, I was not expecting to find Hungarian Stuffed Bell Peppers, Sherried Orange Rice or Tuna Macaroni Salad. Nor was I looking for recipes that use "packaged taco seasoning mix" and canned cream soups. Yuck!
I have made several recipes in this book and enjoyed them all. The best recipe so far is the Green Chile Cream Chicken Enchiladas on page 133. I make this for company all the time and everybody loves them. It's a great recipe that has always come out beautifully and I have had many requests for the recipe. I live in New Mexico and so I think I can reasonably say I have some expertise on the subject of the cuisine here :-). I give this book 5 stars.
We love flavors of the Southwest, and this cookbook is a great sampler of that type of recipe. There are lots of geat recipes for Mexican-style foods, but my one disappointment is that there does not seem to be a recipe for the most basic relleno. Oh well. It's still a great cookbook. Another point to note is that the dessert recipes are mostly not regional - they are the same recipes that you'll find in dozens, scores, HUNDREDS of other community-style cookbooks (Nanaimo bars, 4-layer dessert, lemon squares, etc.). But overall, I'm eagerly waiting my garden crop of peppers this summer so I can start trying these great recipes!
I actually own ALL of this pair's terrific 'best of' series (or, me and the bank anyway)....and they are great at culling out the really local flavor from zillions of local cookbooks, to truly include THE BEST in each of their books. Well done ladies - wish I had thought of it myself!! I hope you don't have to BUY the hundreds of cookbooks from each state- what a great job to have them SENT to you....but everything I really wanted in the New Mexico book- a near neighbor to me, and one I have visited a few times- but not often enough!
This recipe book is AMAZING. I absolutely love everything in it. New Mexican cuisine is the only way to cook. If you want some new spice in your food life, this is the way to go. Also, I love "The Rancho de Chimayo" cookbook. Try them both out for a fantastic array of meals.
I am very pleased with this cookbook. Many great recipes using our wonderful New Mexico green and red chilis. I purchased three books and gave two away as gifts and my friends were very pleased also.
It's a nice book I wouldn't spend a lot of money on it. There are a lot of duplicate recipes by different chefs or restaurants. I like the fact that many recipes seem authentic
