Growing Vegetables West Of The Cascades, Updated 6th Edition: The Complete Guide To Organic Gardening

Now in a special updated 6th edition with a new formula for complete organic fertilizer, this complete guide to organic vegetable gardening addresses issues of soil, seeds, compost, and watering. Growing Vegetables West of the Cascades evolved from a self-published pamphlet to the master guide to organic vegetable gardening over the past 35 years. Steve Solomon, who founded the Territorial Seed Company, was one of the early proponents of organic gardening, and the first to codify and refine the best practices of small-plot vegetable gardening in the Pacific Northwest. The approaches to understanding and preparing soils, composting, chemical-free fertilizers, efficient uses of water, and garden planning are universal to any climate or region. Solomon gets specific in his extensive advice on growing specific crops--from tomatoes and beans to kale and turnips--in the gentle maritime Northwest climate. He lays out the principles, but advocates that readers think for themselves and grow their gardens as they see fit.

This book is written primarily for a Cascadian audience, i.e., folks living in the Northern Maritime climate of Western Washington or Oregon (very similar to the climate in much of Britain). If you're gardening there, this book is tailor-made perfect for you! However, even if you don't live there most of its content will be useful and applicable. I live in a dry Northern Idaho climate and still reference this book often. Steve Solomon has decades of gardening experience and research to learn from, and ALL of his books are worth reading, especially his more recent books. "Gardening When it Counts" is also a very good book.

This is my food growing bible. I was like Carl (when you read the book you will understand what it means to be like Carl). Now I can grow almost year round. I understand my soil, my plants, my microclimate. Not a dry book. It has information you wont find elsewhere. I highly recommend it. It will change you.

A great and purposeful guide to vegetable gardening here in the PNW. Solomon writes confidently with plenty of experience to support his advice on the how to grow it successfully all you PNW gardeners! His anecdotal sharing and sense of humor are found throughout the text which aid the discerning gardener in smartly approaching their vegetable production in a sustainable, biological way. Frankly, after a series of hugely successful seasons relying upon Solomon's advice and Territorial Seed products, we truly enjoy the bounty of highly nutritious vegetables as a result. Well recommended.

I have an older edition of this book, and bought this one for my brother. If you are trying to grow vegetables in the Pacific Northwest, I highly recommend having this book on hand as a reference. It's so dense with information that you could not possibly absorb it reading straight through, but I go back time and again to the various sections and am learning a great deal as I adapt to new gardening conditions. The author is extremely knowledgeable, and has earned his right to be opinionated! I was interested to learn, as I read the section on seeds, that he was the original founder of Territorial Seed Company, which he later sold.

I enjoyed the book, and it's one of those that, as a gardener, you tend to open many times during the growing season. It is very comprehensive, and, sheer delight, it is area specific. Gardening in our area tends to have unique characteristics, and these are well covered. I love the emphasis on organic techniques, and there is even an economical recipe for fertilizer which worked very well for me this first year of trying it. The book thoroughly covers all aspects of gardening in raised beds or regular vegetable gardening. I still have wonderful veggies at the end of the season, in fact I have NEVER managed to grow them as well as this year!

The definitive gardening Bible for this region. Includes valuable advice not found elsewhere. The chapter on watering is key.

Great basic info for veggie gardening in Western Washington or Oregon. A bit text intensive with no pictures makes it hard to use. But, the basic guildance is great.

good information for bgining and advanced gardenerthanks all is well
