"Creating Miniature Knights" is a fantastic book on several levels. You might think that a book in two parts by miniaturists with quite different styles might make for a disjointed effort, but the collaboration between Peter Greenhill and Mario Venturi works surprisingly well. Mr. Greenhill will be known to collectors of miniature knights as a worthy successor to Richard Courtenay, owning the Courtenay casting molds and carrying in his tradition. These are, at first glance glossily painted toy knights, but painstakingly researched and accurate in terms of their armor and heraldic painting. Mario Venturi works in a much more modern style, producing matte-painted medieval figures sculpted more realistically than the stylized Courtenay-Greenhill figures, but with equally fastidious attention to the arms, armor and heraldry of the figures.The Greenhill part of the book naturally has a certain amount of repetition of material found in "Heraldic Miniature Knights", but collectors will certainly want both. In "Creating Miniature Knights", Mr. Greenhill emphasises the importance of heraldic research and accurate representation in the figures, which features excellent photos of the Courtenay designs to illustrate these points.The second half of the book by Venturi centers around a magnificent diorama of the 100 years War Battle of Poitiers, done with 60mm English and French knights, men-at-arms and archers, both horse and foot. The amazing part is that all but four figures in this crowded and vibrant slice of battlefield are custom designs either executed or commissioned by Mr. Venturi.
