This book is more of a booklet and is geared more towards the beginning professional or toward a surveyor's helper. It is a mix of very basic instructions and esoteric survey language. I find no fault with the advice and techniques but it is not a stand-alone book that will teach the novice how to do layout; its more geared toward the beginning professional who needs a handy reminder/refresher on layout. It probably works best as a part of the whole set which it is. I could see this entire series being rolled into a text book with each booklet becoming a chapter.
