I want to put in a 15x30' pond. This book was only a little helpful. It did not cover well how to line a big pond, pumps required, power of pumps to lift water a long distance or up hill. I had a lot of questions and the book answered very few. Would I buy the book again. Likely yes. I have not found anything better and it did help me some with my planning...mostly it became clear how much I do not know and will have to find out from other sources.
This has a nice little history of ponds to start with (I like to have background history), then it shows in great detail how you can create your own backyard water pond. The illustrations are very pleasing, and the step-by-step is something that even *I* can follow. I think if I had an extra $5,000 laying around waiting to be spent (yes the pool designs, while it doesn't give a price list for each item, you know it's going to cost a pretty penny), I'd start building one in our backyard tomorrow. I just need to convince my wife that water pond space is more important than land garden space.
This is the first "Water Garden & Koi/Fish Pond" book I bought. I paged through it at my brick and mortar store every time I went that I just had to buy it. It was led to a lot of inspiration for my pond design. After this book, I sought of online media and found that Aquascape's videos and their TV series Pond Stars further deepened my desire for a fish pond that I could relax by and also play in. Some of the points made by the guys are Aquascape ring true to me after the research I have done: ponds should look and be as natural as possible. In this book, the pictures reflect some of this design aesthetic, but the pictures and instructions for actually doing the work yourself depict the typical flagstones piled on top of the edge or brick for the edging. So though the pictures and ideas are great, details for how to reproduce what you are seeing in the photos are lacking. Regardless, I really appreciate this book because it places so much focus on building the pond (either preformed or liner) and the different ways to reinforce your pond, as well as water features and how to install a waterfall or water course, and different filters. Fountains and smaller projects are also touched upon, and flowers and fish are covered but thankfully the book doesn't designate half the material on different lotuses and lillies like some of the other titles I have read. Of the 12 chapters, 8 are dedicated to construction, design, and maintenance of the pond. The pages are glossy, colorful, and the information is helpful to those interested in ponds, fountains, or creating a wetland. Overall this is one of the best books I have found on the subject of "garden ponds". If you are looking for a book with construction tips, this book has plenty of this information, however it does not provide plans for a specific project.
I purchased this book to get a good understanding of pond filtration. The book did not provide this even though the topic was covered. I ended up buying some biological and uv filtration systems to get some experience with filtration. Skip the book and try some pond products instead.
The book offers excellent information. Clear and well stated., and in excellent shape, wonderful purchase. I would recommend as a starter ..
this book is great tells you a lot you need to know about ponds and plants and a lot more. I would recommend this book to anybody.
