I needed this book for a course in Database Management and thought I would try Kindle to save some weight on my aching back. Unfortunately, the book in this format was more of a detriment than a help in completing the course. There are three major problems:1) There is critical data provided in tables (figure images) which are of such poor resolution quality that extracting the data to complete the exercises is nearly impossible.2) Second, while the search function is nice, the book is NOT reference ready.3) The book comes with free data file resources, necessary to complete exercises. References to the internet location of these is provided on the inside cover of the print book. These references are completely missing from the Kindle Version of this book.Lastly, once you purchase the digital copy, you are stuck with it won't even exchange for the print copy of the same title, so DON'T make the mistake I did, buy the Print copy instead!
Microsoft Access has always seemed intimidating to me. Even after I enrolled in a Computer Applications course, I was nervous about how comprehensive the subject would be. So I was pleased that it was very easy to follow. I never felt lost or confused with the chapter lessons and instructions. It even offered supplemental lessons that are downloadable at no extra cost, and end of chapter reviews. Great book. I aced my course, so no complaints here.
I've used Shelly Cashman books whenever I have to learn to use a computer program. I'm a visual learner and the extensive graphics really help me understand concepts and procedures. I've used Access databases in the past, but am at best an intermediate user. I needed something to help explain some of the new features in Access 2010. The Shelly Cashman series does that. This book is an introduction and will get you into the program if you aren't doing anything very complex. If you need programming or fancy database features, because you already understand the basics, you'll need a more advanced book.
Book is specifically designed for a classroom text. The book has good pictures and not many mistakes or lack of explanation. The book covers a lot of Access 2010 and I am sure there are more topics that could be included. Anything not in this book would probably be covered in a reference book such as Access 2010 Bible or a similar reference book. Most of the Shelly/Cashman series of books are found in many junior colleges. It can get the reader up to speed in a couple of weeks by working daily at your own pace, and of course at your local college or University.
This textbook is well written, however, the step-by-step instructions are overly simplified. I understand the first few chapters being simplified so that the student can understand what's going on, but after that you would think they'd know how to open Access and print documents.Other than that, this book is helpful.
I love Shelly Cashman textbooks. They provide step by step projects, extra practice exercises, and plenty of online supplemental materials. I have used these textbooks to study for MOS certification, and I have scored very well on every test I have taken. I attribute great test scores to the comprehensive coverage provided by these textbooks.
Using the Cashman series of books are great to use in or our of a college class. The step by step instructions with plentiful screen shots throughout each chapter makes getting the basics of each action very easy to follow. By following these actions, the user will at least get the idea and at least one way of doing the action. As every Windows user knows, there are multiple ways to accomplish each action and sometimes the book will vary that action step to allow the user to learn alternate methods.I have found the books easy to follow in and out of class and used as a classroom textbook, it allows the class to flow quickly and efficiently. What I find really nice about the Cashman series of books is that there is a great support website out there where you can download all the needed data for the book exercises and labs as well as the support materials to help learn the book's subject. This makes it much more efficient and easier to learn the concepts without betting dragged down manually inputting the data. Which, even though covered in the book, makes life easier.BUT, be sure you get the correct version of the book. Different versions contain a different number of chapters. That is the only thing needed to really be aware of when purchasing this series of books.Definitely recommend the Cashman series of books for the person wanting to learn how to gain all that is needed to operate the program outlined in the book.
Access isn't a "plug and play" software. You need this wonderful step by step illistration to get a grip on the software. It's also a great reference manual. Not a software to prioritze unless you're going to use it often.
