Examples are given of actual workshop applications and conversions, and on battery supplies for the use of motors in mobile projects.

Having purchased several books in this series, I figured this one to be aimed at the novice as well. I could not have been more wrong. The photographs are not labled; neither are the diagrams and schematics. If you do not know all of the nomenclature and symbols, as well as have a strong knowledge electric motor construction, this book is useless. So, if you are looking for a guide to what salvaged motor from say an old washer, or an ac unit,or furnace fan, could be used to power your homemade drillpress; forget it. This is not what you want.Despite what the title and blurbs may lead you to believe.
This book , as many in the workshop series are, simply a rehash of old information. This is still a handy reference piece to have on hand. It also should be presented to potential purchasers, that many of theses are from a strictly British backround and viewpoint.
Fantastic reading for those of us who delight in repurposing electric motors to eclectic needs. The contents are a little dated - an updated version could talk about the cheaply available VFDs and fan controllers.
If you don't live in a 220V electrical grid, this book is somewhat limited in its usefulness. It's mostly oriented toward 220V motors, which are ubiquitous among small appliances and tools outside the U.S. We do use some 220V stuff, but mainly for larger motors, so the book is not totally without value to an American hobbyist. As the other reviewer said, you need to have some understanding of electricity and motors to get the most from this book. If you do know your way around an electric motor, you can get some valuable hints and tips from this book.
