I am just starting out with this hobby and know the license material, but not much else. I need the basics of how to and what to operate my radio. Short of a one on one training class, I can't think of a better introduction to ham radio

It's fine for an introduction to the amateur radio service, but it's definitely oriented towards the novice. Provides a basic overview of what one can do in amateur radio, with an emphasis on volunteer emergency communications service

This manual should be in everyone's toolbox. Has detailed info on so many aspects of the hobby. Helped me to get started and not sound like a greenhorn

Not a good book for the beginner. It seemed like a series of articles made into a book. I was constantly reading undefined terms, and the last half of the book covered subjects that you would clearly not get involved in until you had a good handle on the basics of amateur radio. Yet my guess is that the experienced ham would have found it boring. I got a little out of it, but I would not recommend it to someone who is trying to get involved in ham radio.

This is an excellent publication and it is less expensive than at the ARRL store. However, be aware that this book is not for someone new to amateur radio or someone returning from a long absence (me). It is very, very technical. If you are looking for a book that explains in detail how to build simple ham radio antennas for the novice, this isn't it.

The Amateur Radio Relay League (ARRL) spells it out nicely in this book. This book assumes you are a licensed amateur radio operator and shows you how to properly run your ham radio station. Excellent book!

This go-to manual is a foundational book for anyone getting into the hobby of amateur radio. If anything this book lays out, in simple tables, band/frequency plans, calling frequencies, etc. This book will offer a quick reference for a lot of the gouge you might otherwise find on the internet at your desk. I recommend this book just for the purpose of having it handy as a quick info source when you have forgotten a practice, rule, or piece of advice.

This version has such a tremendous update to the emergency communication section, that that section alone would make it worth owning. The updated sections on Digital Communications are also superb.
