I'm not a big time DX-er, at least not yet. This book was easy to read and full of great information. I expect it will help me a lot once I finally get my new antenna put up so I can get back on HF.My call sign is AG3EK.
This is a perfect guide for the beginning DXer. But it also contains a lot of great information for even experienced DXer's. It's an easy and enjoyable read. I've found myself going back through many chapters many times. I believe this is the best book in the category.
DXing is the dedicated pursuit of amateur radio contacts with rare or difficult-to-contact distant stations. Successful DXing is a competitive sport and requires patience, better than average technical smarts, good operating skills and proficiency in assembling an effective amateur radio station. Of these, possibly patience is the most valuable single attribute. On the other side of the ledger, however, the pursuit of proven "contacts" with rare a/o distant stations is a timeless pursuit and dedicated radio hams spend countless hours in pursuit of each new distant station. This book will be especially valuable to the aspiring "DXer". It is a comprehensive review of this sport and will be a resource to both the newbie DXer, and also to the more experienced who wish to read about how the competition is practicing the relevant skills. The book is eminently readable and authentic, and recommended to those who desire to improve their DXing skills, to those who are new to this competitive sport and to those who are merely interested in learning what this particular brand of enthusiasts find so irresistible! A recommended resource for your reading pleasure!
I bought the original when I'd had my general license for about a year. This is a worthy update to it.It's painfully obvious that many ham operators need to read this. His first and most important rule is to listen. If you don't you'll never hear the DX station announce "listening up 5 to 10" so they immediately call. Equally important is to listen to the stations that the DX calls. If they are Midwest or West coast and you're in New England with a modest antenna like me, you should move on.My only complaint is that the author stressed spending your money on upgrading antennas first. While this is good in theory , many of us don't have the room or money for a tower and beam antenna.
To be honest, I'm giving the book 5 stars because I want to promote future books on this topic.I'm thrilled the author put forward the effort to write a book on DXing. That being said, I found the information in the book elementary and common information within the Amateur Radio community.Nothing in the book that wouldn't be commonly found in a few Amateur Radio magazine articles. It would be wonderful to read a book on a DXr's life journey, starting out small as most hams do, and advancing through different radio equipment, and advancing in various antennas and the DX results they provided.
A quick read that is useful new hams interested in finding out if DX is an aspect of the hobby they would be interested in. It goes on to offer a number of tips and procedures that will get you started successfully. Well worth the buck it costs.
Very useful easily explained and short info on DX-ing, even better than 1st edition. Every HAM, even experienced should read it, reminds of essentials very often forgotten in pileups.
Good information about DXing. I recommend this to anyone who wants to work DX. The price is right also. The reading list at the end looks pretty good also.
